The benefits of yoga asana practice (the physical yoga poses) are not found only in the full extension of an asana. Yoga is about connecting with your body, increasing your awareness, and improving your focus. The physical asanas are an important part of that, and the benefits, which go beyond these intentions, can be felt in every aspect of our lives.
When doing yoga, it is important that we are mindful of the natural limitations of our bodies by acknowledging our natural flexibility and prior injuries. Although most of us can work within standard guidance for an asana, some of us do need modifications, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is better to modify than to give up and lose our practice altogether.
I have personal experience with sciatica and herniated discs and I have used yoga as part of my toolbox to recover. I have put the effort into recovering the full use of my body in terms of my ability to continue doing the activities that I love. I had to modify my yoga practice significantly in the beginning to get me through the tough times and I want to share my learnings with you.
This month, I will be sharing how-to videos on my YouTube channel regarding modifications specific to lower back herniated disc and sciatica injuries: how to get up and down safely, how to find a comfortable seated position, and how to modify savasana.
In order to kick-off my channel and 2021 on a high note, I will be starting January with two practices to help you start your year off on the right foot. One is for detox and any lingering holiday hangovers, and the other is for starting your day, or year, on a kind and gentle note.
Please join me in starting off 2021 feeling refreshed and renewed by checking out my free yoga practices and how-to videos on YouTube every Monday.
Happy New Year!
